Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he enjoyed playing different card games when he was young. He discovered himself becoming very aggressive in the above-mentioned card games as he was competing against his dad. After finishing secondary school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a little while and relocated to New York City to play some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were difficult as he would play many hours and lost a majority of the time. He made some extra money by becoming an runner for the poker players. He judged he could improve his game by balancing his life away from poker. He made an attempt to get more sleep and concentrate more on the game.
The real advancement in his game began when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest gamblers would frequently challenge one another. Howard was able to access a number of the foremost minds in chess. With their help, he would sharpen his cunning thinking skills. He applied these strategy ideas to the game of NL texas hold’em.
Howard also helped his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie Duke was a great student of poker as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the proper choice. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to move out to Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the greatest female players the poker world has ever seen. Howard Lederer relocated to Sin City in 1993 and participated in money games for the successive decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
