Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he loved participating in numerous card games at a young age. He found himself getting very competitive in these particular card games as he was playing his father. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard decided to put higher education on hold for a bit and relocated to New York to compete in some formidable chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s 1st two years were rough as he played extensive hours and do not win most times. He made some additional money by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He judged he possibly could improve his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He brought about an attempt to acquire more sleep and focus even more on poker.
The actual improvement in his skills began when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest players would regularly challenge one another. Howard had access into some of the best minds in chess. With their assistance, he would sharpen his cunning thinking techniques. Howard applied these strategy concepts to the game of No-Limit hold’em.
Howard also helped his sister Annie Duke master poker. Annie was an excellent student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper choice. Howard told Annie Duke to head out to Sin City and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the strongest women players the poker arena today. Howard Lederer headed to Vegas in 1993 and competed in cash games for the subsequent decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
