Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most difficult but favored poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure variation, has expanded in acceptance so amazingly.
Omaha/8 starts like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A round of wagering ensues in which players can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is called the flop. A further round of wagering happens. After all the players have in turn called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering follows at which point the river card is flipped. The players will need to put together the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where many players can get confused. Unlike Texas Holdem, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player must utilize exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely two hole cards. No more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical notion in almost every poker game.
A low hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the high hand wins the entire pot.
It may seem complex initially, following a couple of hands you will be able to get the basic nuances of play with ease. Since you have players wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha hi lo provides an amazing array of wagering possibilities and because you have numerous individuals shooting for the high hand, along with a few battling for the low. If you enjoy a game with a lot of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha Hi-Lo.
