Gus Hansen had a wonderful year on the WPT where he was the only participant to achieve closing game in 3 of the tournaments. Gus Hansen has been seen on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he bought into the game for $400, 000. You may remember one of the biggest pots in high stakes poker history up against Daniel Negreanu. Gus won a huge pot with quads against Daniel’s full house. Gus has earned many tv poker appearances and is deemed to be one of the strongest gamblers in the world. While competing in online poker, another side of Hansen has been seen. Gus regularly plays in the 200/400 NL max buy in of Forty Thousand dollars. Gus generally buys-in for the min of $16, 000 and gambles very poorly. He waits for a decent hand and then goes all in. I believe Hansen is an excellent poker player but not even close to the regular players at 200/400NL. Unless he is penniless, he has no reason to play at the game with the min buy in.
Playing for the min takes a majority of the ability out of big stack poker. Hansen is assumed to be 1 of the best players in the world but he cannot buy-in for the total amount. I think tv can skew our view of the real world sometimes. The greatest players in the world could be guys you have will not have heard about. Gus can be seen playing web poker on Full Tilt.
